HIKE Descriptions – Winter

Elfin Lakes:

Venture through forest lined with waterfalls to the alpine where you will find magnificent views of Mt Garibaldi and Atwell Peak, which is actually a volcanic pinnacle.  Not to mention breathtaking views of Howe Sound.  This is a moderate hike that is great for those who have some previous aerobic conditioning and want to try a longer trail.  Can be a day or multi day hike (See below) The hut is solar powered with lights, gas fireplace and cooking elements. Perfectly warm for a cold afternoon or evening.

After Spending the day snowshoeing up to Elfin Lakes, take the rest of the day to relax, or play in the snow.  In the winter stay in the warm cozy hut overnight, maybe do some snowing stargazing in the evening?  This hut is not as rugged as one might think, It's continuously warm!  The hut has propane heating, propane lights, hot plates, bunk beds and pit toilets.  Weather you choose to spend some quite time relaxing in your bunk or socializing with guests of the hut, the choice is yours.  People form all over the world find their way to this hut, so it van be busy in the winter.  You may even see people building snow caves to sleep in outside ;)

Difficulty Rating: Intermediate

Elevation Gain: 600m

Average Hike Duration: 22km | ~6-7hrs

Terrain: Switchbacks to start, then trail levels out with extensive scenic views.


Garibaldi Lake:

Garibaldi Lake makes for a good day of snowshoeing through well forested switchbacks.  Enjoy a scenic lookout of the Sea to Sky Valley on the way.  This snowshoe is a popular one in the winter and recommended for those who are already moderately active.  You will get one heck of a workout, while enjoying the serene snow.  Don't worry, we can take many rest-stops along the way!  Food shelters are a pleasant refuge to take a break from the weather.  Having a hot lunch here would be so enjoyable.  

For the Truly hardy souls, there is the option of camping overnight at Burton Hut.  This hut is quaint and quiet.  Shh! it's a secret, many people do not know about it.  The trip to Burton Hut will add an extra 6km each way.

Difficulty Rating: Intermediate

Elevation Gain: 820m

Average Hike Duration: 18km | ~6-8hrs

Terrain: Flowing switchbacks through dense forest.


Brandywine Falls:

This trail is easy and a great option if you are short on time or new to hiking and snowshoeing.  with the exception of one short climb, this trail is flat.  Cruising through lush forest, passing by a small lake and ending with the gorgeous Brandywine Falls and Brandywine valley look out.

Elevation Gain: minimal

Average Hike Duration: 6km | ~2-3hrs

Terrain: Mostly flat with minor elevation gain.


Cheakamus Lake:

One of the easiest snowshoeing trails in Garibaldi Park.  Well suited for those wanting to get out there, yet want to take it easy.  It's also good for those with knee issues, since there is very minimal elevation gain.  You will snowshoe on winter wonderland trails through coniferous forests enjoying your connection with nature.

Terrain: Comfortable, mostly flat snowshoe through gorgeous forest.


Joffre Lakes:

Not only is this hike gorgeous in the summer, it's stunning in the winter too!  Enjoy snowshoeing up a smooth and wide trail with ample views of mountains and valleys.  See the countless trees covered with snow.  This snowshoe is not technical and is great for beginners looking for a bit more of a challenge.

Terrain: Wide trail around three scenic lakes, snowy mountain views, gradual elevation gain.
